Why You Should Keep Business and Personal Money Separate

Using the same bank account for business and personal spending may seem convenient, especially when a business is new. However, it can quickly become difficult to understand what the business actually earned and spent.

A separate business bank account gives you a clearer picture of your business activity. Customer payments go into one place, and business purchases come out of that same account. You do not have to search through groceries, household bills, and personal purchases to find business-related activity.

A separate account also makes it easier to review spending, prepare information for tax time, and answer questions about a particular purchase.

Start by opening a bank account used only for the business. When possible, use a separate card for business purchases as well.

If you accidentally use the business account for something personal, make a note of it. Do not treat it as a normal business cost.

The same rule applies when using personal money for a business purchase. Save the receipt and clearly record what happened.

Keeping business and personal money separate does not need to be complicated. It is a simple habit that makes your financial records cleaner and easier to understand.
